about

This track was written as a project based on the Dazzle Ship when it was moored in Leith. It was written entirely by a class of children at Victoria Primary School and is from the point of view of a German Submariner.

lyrics

What Can You Hear?

I can hear the echo of the oil
drip drip dripping
I can feel shaking of the waves
crash crash crashing
I can hear the sound of my crew
mates singing
I can hear the sound of propellors
pushing the water away
I can hear the boots on the ladders
Creak creak creaking
I can smell the gas from the pipes
His his hissing
I’m afraid the uboat might get hit
By torpedos
I can hear the pistons from the engine
Roaring and howling away

The stiffness of the periscope
The brightness of the sea
The rising of the fog
What do you hear now you can see
Engine running like a kitten
Hatches squeaking like a mouse
No muscles are moving
In our underwater house
Writing poems of poppycock
While the fish are all around
What can you hear
Now that you don’t make a sound
