The 9 Lives Of Malky Jones
Heave ho me hearties
What's in the stew today?
Weevils, grubs and pirate bones
Force down crackers hard as stones
His mum thinks he's her sweet little boy
But he kills with a knife as if it's a toy
To his shipmates he's a rollicking rogue and cook
To the Leith Police he's a thug and a crook.
Drunk as a lord, he swings and he swears
Boasting of his viking forebears
Lost his footing, doing the hokey cokey
And as he fell he prayed to Loki
Eyes pecked out by gulls and crows
How did he die? nobody knows
Nibbled away by hundreds of thousands of fish
The mermaids think him a dainty dish
Malky’s Mum was brewing a stew
Lot’s of fun until she knew
She finds his milky eyes and shiny hairs
Drops the pot, stops and stares
Under Vicky school playground
A pile of pots and bones they found
Was it a lord a beggar or thief who knew?
‘Twas Malky Jones stirring his stew
Heave ho me hearties
What's in the stew today?
Weevils, grubs and Malky Jones
Who’d have thought we’d crunch his bones?

The Willow Tree Waltz

The Willow Tree Waltz
Out sail the boats only the waves roll in
Those on the shore left watching for their kin
The man makes a creel for his wife to carry
She stands on the brae as the clouds sail by
The bairn sleeping snug in a skull of willow
The reek from the lums rising into the sky
The man has to fish though his heart would tarry
He stands on the deck as the brown sails fly
Fish squirm in nets as they’re hauled from the billows
Wind circling up from a dark’ning sky
His love prays to God for the man she married
She climbs through the storm as the snowflakes fly
All sight of his voyage the storm has swallowed
She swims through the air with a drowning cry
The creel come the spring has no bairn to carry
It’s roots weave a grave for the soul inside
The Brae has a mark for the fishers to follow
A tree rises up joining ground sea and sky

What Can You Hear?

What Can You Hear?
I can hear the echo of the oil
drip drip dripping
I can feel shaking of the waves
crash crash crashing
I can hear the sound of my crew
mates singing
I can hear the sound of propellors
pushing the water away
I can hear the boots on the ladders
Creak creak creaking
I can smell the gas from the pipes
His his hissing
I’m afraid the uboat might get hit
By torpedos
I can hear the pistons from the engine
Roaring and howling away
The stiffness of the periscope
The brightness of the sea
The rising of the fog
What do you hear now you can see
Engine running like a kitten
Hatches squeaking like a mouse
No muscles are moving
In our underwater house
Writing poems of poppycock
While the fish are all around
What can you hear
Now that you don’t make a sound
